Artists & Documentary Photographer
Brief info
Jo is an Australian freelance photographic artist based in China until the Zero-Covid policy halted the community art project she was working on. Jo has 26 years of experience working with film and digital imaging. She studied film and alternative photography processes at high school and university and holds a Diploma in Digital Imaging as well as a Bachelor's Degree in TV & Sound Production.
Jo worked as a commercial and fine art photography educator for eleven years at a technical college in Australia, and in recent years she has begun to explore and document the quiet corners of life, spaces often overlooked, spaces unseen, the intangible.
Jo combines photography with projection, painting, and alternative printing techniques, and most recently plastic waste. Her first all-female photographers' group show opened at MUSE&um creative space in Shanghai in August 2021 followed quickly by a group show at the 1972 Contemporary Art Museum space in the Chinese city of Hefei and the inaugural Australian Art show at the Consulate General’s residence in Shanghai.
Her most recent show in collaboration with the Yushu Spinal Injury
Organization was due to open at Art+ on the Bund in Shanghai on
June 2022.
Jo was interested in working at Sagarmatha Next as the space brings together the things she feels most passionate about - mountains, waste, community engagement, and art.
During her residence in Spring 2023, Jo plans to work with photography, portable projection, drawing, and collage combined with
textile and plastic waste to create landscapes and portraits of the people and places around Syangboche and Namche Bazaar. Community engagement is a priority for her and she would love to share these techniques with the residents and encourage them to make their own works.
